What is Pirate Kubb?
Pirate Kubb is a fun game that combines skill, strategy, and teamwork. It’s inspired by the traditional game of Kubb but with a pirate-themed twist and new elements.
What equipment comes with Pirate Kubb?
The game set includes:
• 1 Island Rope – Lay this rope in the middle of the playing field to form your island. Make it round, wavy, or shaped like a treasure map island – it’s up to you!
• 1 Pirate King – The target at the heart of the game. Place him in the middle of the island – your mission is to tip him over with a Battle Stick to win!
• 10 Pirate Ships – These kubbs represent your ships, each loaded with bottles (4-3-2-1) for the journey. Each team gets 5 ships—one team sails with red ships, the other with blue.
• 2 Navigation Rings – Throw them to set a new destination, change direction, surprise your opponents, and keep the adventure unpredictable.
• 5 Pirate Bags – Throw these to sail across the sea. They can be traded in for Battle Sticks or used for close combat!
• 6 Battle Sticks – Your playful pirate weapons for knocking over ships and defeating the Pirate King.
• 4 Field Markers – Mark the edges of your playing area so no pirate steps out of bounds.

What is the ideal playing field size?
The recommended field size for standard play is 6 x 9 meters. Use the Field Markers to mark each corner. Short on space? No problem! You can shrink the field to smaller areas.
Can Pirate Kubb be played on any surface?
Yes! Pirate Kubb is a versatile adventure that can be played almost anywhere -on grass, sand, snow, gravel, concrete, or a parking lot. A flat surface helps keep the Pirate King proudly standing while the Pirate Ships lie down, ready for battle – so a little uneven ground won’t stop the fun!
How is Pirate Kubb different from classic Kubb?
It includes movement with Navigation Rings, sailing with Pirate Bags, multiple win conditions, and Close Combat using Rock–Paper–Scissors.
What do I get at the start of my turn, and what do I do first?
You receive 2 Navigation Rings and 5 Pirate Bags. You must begin your turn by attempting to sail 2 different Pirate Ships.
How do I sail a ship?
1. Place your front foot at the rear of the ship.
2. Throw a Navigation Ring to set a destination.
3. Throw Pirate Bags to try to land one on the ring.
What happens when I try to land a Pirate Bag on the Navigation Ring?
If the bag lands and stays on the ring, it’s a successful sail - move the ship to that spot. If you miss it, the ship stays in place but still loses 1 bottle. Turn the ship to show its new endurance level.
Do I have to use both Navigation Rings, and can I sail the same ship twice?
Yes, both rings must be used each turn, and on two different ships - unless you only have one ship left.
What happens if I throw a Navigation Ring out of bounds or in the wrong direction?
You lose that ring and one Pirate Bag.
What happens to leftover Pirate Bags after sailing?
You can exchange them 1-for-1 for Battle Sticks and use them to attack your opponent’s ships.
How do I attack a Pirate Ship, and what happens if I hit one?
Stand on your backline, throw a Battle Stick underhand, and hit a ship in line of sight—from your backline, through one of your ships, to the target ship. You’ll hear a “CLANK” as the Battle Stick makes contact. It loses 1 bottle. If you hit your own or multiple ships, each one loses 1 bottle. Turn each ship to show its new endurance level.
What is Close Combat, and how does it work?
If your ship is within arm’s reach of an enemy ship, spend 1 Pirate Bag to challenge them to Rock–Paper–Scissors. The loser’s ship loses 1 bottle. You can battle multiple times if you have more Pirate Bags.
How do I get a chance to attack the Pirate King?
Sail one of your Pirate Ships so it lands on or touches the opponent’s backline. From that spot, you earn the chance to throw a Battle Stick at the Pirate King.
How many throws do I get at the Pirate King?
1 throw per landed ship. If the ship has 2 or 3 bottles left, you get 2 or 3 throws.
What happens if someone accidentally knocks over the Pirate King?
The team that did it loses the game immediately.
Can a ship move backward?
No, only forward or sideways within the playing field.
Can we add obstacles to the game?
Yes! You can add obstacles like buckets, cones, logs, or anything else you can find to create extra challenges. It’s fun to make each game different and test your pirate skills!
Can we modify the rules?
Absolutely! You can customize the rules to match your play style, age group, or playing field. Pirate Kubb is all about fun and flexibility - make it your own!
Is Pirate Kubb suitable for children?
